THE DIRECT ACCESS SCHEME - FULL CATEGORY A ENTITLEMENT
Direct Access or DAS as it is often referred to provides the opportunity to ride any size of motorcycle upon successfully passing the practical motorcycle test. To qualify you must be aged 21 or over. You will train on a motorcycle with a power output of at least 35kW (50 b.h.p.), and, whilst training you must be accompanied by a suitably qualified instructor at all times. Although the format for the practical motorcycle test is the same for all categories the Direct Access route requires control of the larger, and heavier motorcycle at slow speed. Consequently particular emphasis is placed upon slow-speed training.

CATEGORY A2 LICENCE
Often referred to as "The 125cc Test" enables the successful candidate to ride any motorcycle with a power output of 25kW (33 B.H.P.). The restriction lasts for two years from passing the test. After two years all restrictions are lifted from your licence and you can ride any size of motorcycle. This route benefits the younger rider, aged 17 - 21 who is prevented from taking the Direct Access Route. It also benefits those who have control problems at slow speed and those who have no desire to ride a large motorcycle, i.e. scooter riders. For the scooter rider I am the only trainer in the north of England to provide geared scooters for training and taking your test. Requirements for this test are the motorcycle must be between 121cc and 125cc and be capable of attaining 100 km/h.

OTHER TEST ROUTES
CATEGORY A1 LICENCE
Often referred to as the small, or light, motorcycle test. To obtain this category of licence you must take your test on a motorcycle between 75cc and 125cc. After passing your test in this category you may ride a motorcycle without, the incumbencies of being a provisional licence holder, of up to 125cc.
CATEGORY P LICENCE (MOPED)
If all you wish to ride is a moped, a motorcycle of up to 50cc with a maximum speed of 50 km/h (approximately 31 mph) you can take the moped test, even at 16 years of age! If you passed your car test before 1st February 2001 you will automatically have a moped entitlement on your licence. However it is recommended that you complete a C.B.T. before you venture on the road. If you passed your car test after 1st February 2001 you must complete a C.B.T. to validate your category P entitlement. There is no need to re-take the C.B.T. every 2 years.
ACCELERATED ACCESS
Similar to Direct Access enabling you to upgrade from a category A1 or A2 licence to full category A. This route is often taken by persons who passed the A1 or A2 test before they were 21 and, upon attaining the age of 21 wish to lose all restrictions to their licence. If you fail the category A test you will not lose any previous test pass entitlements.
AUTOMATIC MOTORCYCLES
If you pass your test on an automatic motorcycle you will be restricted to riding automatic machines unless you re-take the appropriate motorcycle test on a geared machine. If you fail this test you will not lose any previous test pass entitlements.

RETURNING TO BIKING
You may have passed your test years ago but have not ridden a motorcycle for many a year. Statistically you fall within the second highest category of those involved in fatal accidents. Motorcycles have become more powerful and the roads have become busier. One or two "Back to Biking" sessions is usually enough to get you back into the swing.
NEW BIKE FAMILIARISATION
Whether you are returning to biking or simply purchasing a more powerful motorcycle - you can be met at the showroom and introduced to the capabilities of your new bike.
